The Wheel of Time: Season 1 (2021)

Season 1
The Wheel of Time

Critics Consensus

The Wheel of Time's revolutions can be a bit creaky as it tries to stand out from other fantasy series, but it succeeds admirably in making Robert Jordan's epic approachable for the uninitiated.

While not what I was expecting, by the season finale I left feeling like they did this story justice in order to tell the tale on the small screen. Robert Jordan's tomes are know as the "Wheel of Words" for a reason. With over 11,500 pages, in some 14 books, and 147 POV characters, across the length of the series, there is no way this could be adapted without wholesale butchery of the material. That being said, the bright spots in my mind where the casting of Rosamund Pike as Moiraine Damodred. She brings the acting chops and intensity necessary for the character and anchors the, otherwise unknown, groups of mains that fill out the cast. I thought the effects and set-piece battle scenes were some of the best parts of the season. It you are a diehard of the books then you will likely have a several moments where you want to chuck something through your television. I have tired a few times to complete this marathon and get to Lord of Chaos and cannot continue. I, for one, would like to see this tale told in a much more succinct manner without all of the fashion details and braid tugging. I just hope they can get the whole wheel told before it gets the axe. Let the butchery continue!

Not only a terrible adaptation, but just an overall awful show. Could have forgiven it if the show was actually good, but it was awful.

It was a good show but feels like they are cramming in too much plot into too few episodes.

Poor. As a MASSIVE Robert Jordan fan and especially of the wheel of time series I have waited AN AGE for someone to recognise the series as movie/tv worthy. I completely understand you cannot possibly set 14 books to the screen word for word, but you would think that they would at least stick to the storyline! The actors do a great job of the parts they play but it would have helped a great deal if the script/screen writers would have accurately written the characters as they are in the books! They do not even follow the path of the story correctly, making certain events happen before their time and including characters that simply were not even introduced until later in the series! Some of the characters are simply wrong In the way their personalities are portrayed and although Siuane and Morraine were friends since novices they were not lovers - it's like they shoved that in so they could tick the equality and diversity box that everyone is doing these days (and that's not me being homophobic before anyone starts) ..I could go on there's LOTS wrong about the series…but I'll just say if you are anyway enticed by the story read the books, they are massively better! VERY DISAPPOINTING.

Seems the only interaction the show creator's had with the books was to use them for toilet paper.

I think that the season 1 wasn't perfect, but it was good promising start for the show. I'm looking forward for season 2 and hope it will be even more successful. Things I liked the most: Cast is just great. I have zero complaints about casting and acting in the show, there was chemistry between characters, there was tension, and actors really give live to characters on screen. Costume design was unique, with big attention to details. Also enjoyed soundtrack, especially main theme for opening titles. Things I didn't like: My main complaint is pacing. I think a lot of people mentioned it before me and many will after me. In some episodes it was ok, but in general I felt that we need more time. Really sad that Amazon didn't give showrunners 2 hour pilot and 10 episodes, hope they'll reconsider it for the future seasons. Also didn't like some things writers changed for Dragon, but my final opinion will depend on season 2. Overall I enjoyed the season 1, was really happy to see adaptation of one of my favorite series on screen.

I have not read any of the original novels. I found this series to be boring. It is a constant chase. The good guys run from the bad guys. The good guys seem to have gotten away from the bad guy. Then suddenly new bad guys appear. As a side note the casting it truly bizarre. You would expect that isolated villages would have a lot of inbreeding. Instead, every place this story goes to looks like a United Nations of people from around the world. Consequently, no place in the story looks distinctive.

This is the show that helped me decide to cancel Amazon Prime. I am not a book fan, so I had no expectations to sway my score either way. However, I must state that this is by far, some of THE worst content Amazon has ever put on Prime and they regularly put on Asylum movies. To add insult to injury, they actually produced this rubbish. I should have quit after the first 45 seconds because, during that open narration, my alarm bells were ringing and by the time I watched the first 3 episodes, they had been confirmed and so, I was out. Just stop with this before you waste money on it. Finish the Expanse, Amazon, it has potential, this nonsense does not.

Full book reader here, and absolutely loving the show. Multiple re-watches still have me tearing up at times and cheering at times. Beautifully acted, and beautifully set. The music is fantastic. Some pacing challenges for me in the final episode, but not enough to earn a down vote. It does a great job at bringing non-readers into the world and still leaving some surprises for book readers. Really enjoying discussing this world with lots of folks who are loving the show but would never have read the books.
