Critics Consensus

Maid takes great care with its sensitive subject matter to craft a drama that is not always easy to watch, but undeniably powerful, grounded by an outstanding performance by Margaret Qualley.

I know it's good. It's well done all around, but it also seems to go from one horrific event to another with little hope in sight. I would recommend it, but it needs an expression of the beauty and hope found within our dark days.

Alex was just so unbearable in this show. I know I was supposed to root for her, but I couldn't because she was so annoyingly dumb in everything she did. I actually found myself hoping for her to fail hard at the end, but of course, she was going to be saved by the writers. Here are a few of the dumb mistakes that made me dislike her so much. (SPOILERS)… Years back, before she knew Sean, she had a smart, handsome, nice guy (Nate) who was bussing tables while working on his master's degree to be an engineer. He was interested in her, but she had no interest in him. She totally ignored him and was thirsty for the a-hole bartender bad boy living in a trailer. Sorry, but I can't feel sorry for girls who run after the a-hole and then get burned for it. She had a full scholarship. Instead, she got knocked up by an awful piece of trash and almost threw her life away. Her daughter throws her toy out the car window on a busy highway, and she pulls over to get out and find it, risking multiple people's lives and destroying the one thing that could help her get on her feet: her car. When she needed evidence for the courts that Sean was no good, she found it when he was drunk and wrecked on the side of the road with a car full of empty beer cans. That right there should've been a call to the police, just to get it on record. But this stupid b*** decided to drive him home instead. So stupid. Her dad hit on her mom many decades ago. As awful as that was, he clearly changed. He didn't hit on her or any of his new kids, and his wife was very happy with him. He was also very religious and going to AA meetings. She should've tried to forgive him, or at least have a discussion about the past. She didn't even try. She holds a grudge against him twenty years later. When Sean's girlfriend's posse showed up with alcohol and loud music, Alex let that happen. She knew how much was at stake. She's able to be firm when she doesn't need to be, but when she should, she doesn't. She lost a nice apartment because of her stupidity. When Nate offered her everything, she had no interest in being with him. OK, fair enough, she said she wasn't ready for a relationship again. But you don't say that and then run back to screw your ex while dumping your kid on Mr Nice Guy, who you told you'd be back shortly. It was obvious that Nate had to ask her to leave at that point. It was total disrespect because even if she didn't owe him anything, she knew he had feelings for her, and she just used him like a clown. This isn't even an exhaustive list, but it's enough to see why I found it impossible to root for her. I'm honestly shocked that anyone was and that this series got such good reviews.

Great show especially for single mother who is looking for strength to draw in their lives. I can reasonate with the story line and are greatly inspired by it. Really really hope that's a season 2 and 3 and more to it to give strength to single mother/dad out there. Good production! Thank you.

I found it very frustrating to witness these toxic relationships just go on and on and on with no relief in sight. Oprah 101 will tell you to distance yourself from all things negative, easier said than done I know, but this was brutal.

Wow, I didn't expect to like it so much but this series blew me away. The characters were so real, the acting superb and the sad journey of a girl fighting so hard to get out of abuse and revolving door of the system. The dysfunctional families and the haunting past perpetuates from generation to generation with a bleak hope but it shows that determination and will is the key to life. I can't wait for season 2 and I sure hope every actor in the show returns.
